Palace of Charles V

Two parallel ionic-style columns illuminated by lights on the ceiling at the Palace of Charles V during the night.

It’s a geometer’s dream.

The Palace of Charles V is also a fusion of classical and avant-garde styles. The palace is one of many buildings in the Alhambra compound. As you can tell from the photo, we ended up exploring it during our night visit to the Alhambra. It made for an interesting contrast from the rest of the architecture. Gone are Arabic inscriptions and intricate carvings of foliage. Instead, the palace channels geometry in its form. The structure has a square footprint with a circular courtyard. Classical features from ionic columns to pilasters and pediments accent the palace. While this palace is one of the more underwhelming areas compared to the Nasrid Palaces, it does add context and depth to the Alhambra’s dynamic history.
